What is HL7 FHIR?
FHIR, or Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, is a flexible standard that uses RESTful web services to transport healthcare data by pushing the data to its destination or responding to queries.
What would health data exchange look like if we started with a blank page, utilizing modern technological advances?
HL7 FHIR started with this very question. FHIR combines the best features of HL7 V2, HL7 V3, and CDA, while leveraging the latest web service technologies. FHIR is based on modular components called “resources”; which can be combined to solve clinical and administrative problems in a practical way. FHIR is still being developed by HL7, but the first Draft Standard for Trial Use was available in 2014, and the first normative edition is planned for 2017. The FHIR standard is founded on being faster to learn and implement, lower cost, scalable, flexible, and free. Recent initiatives like SMART on FHIR and The Argonaut Project have helped bring FHIR to the main stage.
How does FHIR Impact you?
Dave Shaver, Co-Chair of the HL7 FHIR Governance Board, provides an in-depth look at how FHIR will impact the future of health data exchange, including:
- What differentiates FHIR from other Health Standards?
- Where might FHIR be used?
